Somayeh
Somayeh is an Iranian-born writer and director whose work bridges the cinematic worlds of Iran and the West. After earning a BA in Media Arts and an MA in Documentary by Practice from Royal Holloway, University of London, she moved to London in 2011 to begin her career as an edit assistant. Over the past 13 years, she has not only established a successful editing career but also honed her voice as a writer and director, working across commercials and narrative projects. Her latest short film, Skin of Water | پوست آب, produced by Ridley Scott Associates, is currently on the festival circuit and has been nominated for Best UK Short at the BAFTA/BIFA-qualifying Raindance Film Festival 2024 and is a Semi-Finalist at the Oscar Qualifying Flickers’ Rhode Island Festival 2024.
As part of the next generation of Iranian filmmakers, Somayeh aims to push the legacy of Iranian cinema into a unique magic realism space. By combining the raw poetry of Iranian culture with the heavy influence of Western cinematography, VFX, and sound design, she envisions herself developing as an artist in a style that blends and infuses Iranian sensibilities with the cinematic approaches of directors like Yorgos Lanthimos, Jonathan Glazer, and Joachim Trier.
