Although Jafar Panahi has been banned from filmmaking and leaving the country since 2010, he keeps working without the approval of Iranian authorities. The latest work of him, Three Faces, (which challenges the hot topic of the moment: the problems women actors face in a male-dominated world) has been received eagerly in Cannes. At the red-carpet screening, Jafar Panahi — represented by an empty seat — received a standing ovation.

“Seh Rokh” (3 Faces) shows the director and the Iranian actress Behnaz Jafari driving off to a mountain village in the northwest of Iran, looking for a young woman who has sent a distressing video message.

The film has generally received positive reviews. On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 71 out of 100, based on 9 critics.

“I saw a beautiful movie at Cannes on Saturday night — an artful, surprising and thrillingly intelligent story about a few women trying to make a difference, forging bonds of solidarity in quiet defiance of the repressive, small-minded men in their rural village,” wrote Justin Chang, the film critic of the Los Angeles Times.

“3 Faces can sometimes feel like a whimsical doodle without much forward momentum. But that placidness belies a certain degree of melancholic resignation on Panahi’s part, for himself and his homeland.” Wrote Tim Grierson, the senior critic of screen International.

Other reviews were also very favourable. Only the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw gave a muted assessment, meaning three stars out of five.He said Panahi seemed to be “reaching back 20 years or so to an earlier kind of classic Iranian cinema,” reminiscent of the movies of the late Abbas Kiarostami, and that he wished the banned filmmaker would instead engage with the politics and society of modern Iran.

سه رخ روایتگر داستان سه زن بازیگر است که یکی از آنها در دوران پیش از انقلاب ۵۷ فعال بوده و حال دیگر اجازه فعالیت ندارد، دومی ستاره‌ی روز سینما است و سومی دختری جوان اهل روستایی در آذربایجان که رویای  بازیگری را در سرمی‌پروراند، اما خانواده‌اش اجازه رفتن به تهران را نمی‌دهند. پناهی که در فیلم‌های چون "دایره" و "آفساید" هم به معضلات زنان در ایران پرداخته، در "سه رخ" نیز زنان را در کانون قرار داده است. بهناز جعفری، مرضیه رضایی و مائده ارتقایی از نقش‌آفرینان اصلی در فیلم "سه رخ" هستند. جعفر پناهی خود نیز همچون فیلم دیگرش "تاکسی" در این فیلم نیز حضور دارد
